I could have if I had spent $10000 on medical expenses- because my doctor wrote a prescription for ideal protein, so it is considered prescription costs. but I only spent $5000 on medical expenses so I took standard deduction

I’ve used flex spending but not directly as a tax deduction.

If you have a prescription specifically for IP from a doctor you can deduct the cost as a medical expense if you itemize deductions.

@peculate how does it work if your doc writes a prescription? I’ve never heard of this.

@hymnology if you itemize deductions on your federal tax return you can deduct out of pocket medical expenses. So if your Doctor prescribes ideal protein as a medical necessity for weight loss, what you spend on it would be considered an out of pocket medical expense.

We tried to deduct $18, 000 in medical costs ( 3 back surgeries in one year)and couldn’t because it depends on what your total household income is. USA. But definitely worth checking out. Good luck!
