Honestly, I do Orange Theory workouts 4-5 times per week and I am almost at my goal. I worked out before I started IP and never stopped. I have a hard time with the ‘no exercise’ advice, I have always worked out and always will. My coach and I do not agree on it and personally I think he does not have to agree with me. As the paying customer, he should respect my choices and work with me, not against me. IP even has an alternative Phase 1 plan for people who exercise. I drink BCAAs and feel great. At 48 I look and feel the best I have felt in 5 years.

@alectryomancy I do OTF at least three times a week. To get extra calories I’ll add half of whatever I spent during the workout. My coach advised this.

Honestly, The coaches at my Orange Theory are much more supportive and helpful for my weight loss than my IP coach. They are the ones that told me about BCAAs, my clinic acts like exercising is equivalent to using illegal drugs ‍♀️

@verdieverdigris8808 see what I mean? IP is a great plan and I love the results. I cannot stand the crazy attitudes and inflexibility that go along with though. The fear factor is ridiculous and give IP a bad name; seriously, logging into you account will slow your weight loss? A number of people from my Orange Theory have asked me how I lost the weight and want information about the program. I always preface it with, “I LOVE this program, I do not like the clinic I currently use. ” I used to be at a different clinic with a lovely coach who was positive and helpful. Unfortunately, that office no longer sells IP and I had to move to a new clinic. I only have a few pounds left until my goal and I will finish out at this clinic. I am going to switch once I am on maintenance.

@alectryomancy Learn what extreme exercise does to your body while on such low calories! They aren't trying to be unsupportive, they're trying to keep you healthy. If you continue on such low calories and exercise at high intensity, you are burning vital tissues. There's no other way your body can get the energy.

@alectryomancy I do OT also and not having issues so far. Very hard to not work hard in these classes, but just pay attention and I also don’t use as heavy as weights for some exercises.

@elouise32 yep, that’s how I do it. Best workout and great community! I would much rather decrease my intensity and add BCAAs and another packet. As for the workout burning muscle, for the first time since having children I have shoulder, bicep, and ab muscles again.

@markup not here to argue. It is working for me and clearly many others.
by (6.9k points)
@alectryomancy but at what cost? Your heart muscle? I want to live to see grandchildren and beyond. It’s not worth your life or your health!
by (5k points)
@markup somebody has really scared you about this. If you stay in the aerobic zone, it's not as detrimental to your health as if you exercise in the anaerobic zone. Please read the post above.
by (2k points)
@markup I think you need to get a grip. Exercise never has been and never will be your enemy. You prove my point completely about fear though. Again, not here to fight. Do what works for you and enjoy.
by (6.9k points)
@alectryomancy Its basic science, not fear. Go read a bit about it before you hurt yourself for your vanity.

@dingy. No I’ve studied this. I agree with the woman who gave the info about exercise using the talk test. I’m talking about high intensity exercise. Anaerobic vs aerobic has a big difference on a body that has a low caloric intake. Anaerobic is the goal, aerobic (can’t easily talk) is not.
by (2k points)
@markup again, not here to fight. We are all her for the same reason. As a professional who peer reviews outcomes for professional journals, I am well equipped to understand and critically read scientific findings. I do not appreciate your condescending and offensive tone. Have a great day.
by (6.9k points)
I believe your “get a grip” comment was condescending. The difference is your advice will hurt others & has no scientific basis.

@markup, @masson, a nutritionist and IPer had an amazing and informative comment at the beginning of this thread.

@inbreed thank you! yes I saw. I had originally liked the post. Not sure how that got changed. ‍♀️.

I’ve lost 10 pounds in two weeks and did not exercise one bit. You can do this!
by (1.9k points)
@verdieverdigris8808 I just started and I’m loosing the weight faster. But I keep it where I can talk the whole time
by (11.7k points)
@verdieverdigris8808 I’m only in my third week but after my first month I plan on taking short walks. Only because I recently had back surgery and need to walk for physical therapy. Normally I hate exercise.

You are on an extremely low calorie diet. If you exercise your body will require additional calories from other sources like muscles since there is no glycogen readily available. (Your heart is a muscle) You can do damage to your muscles and other vital tissue by exercising. It’s not worth your overall health to lose a couple pounds.
by (5k points)
@markup you just take a little extra protein. You just don't take any extra fat or carb.
by (6.9k points)
@dingy it’s not that simple. Talk to your coach.
by (1.5k points)
As well, your body will burn the energy you are creating, because it is easier, instead of the fat stores you are trying to get rid of. Not to mention the muscle you will be gaining which will affect the scale. The diet is temporarily, lots of time for exercise during maintenance.

I work out. I just listen to my body and on my workout days I often need an extra packet. My coach is totally fine with it. I try not to do really high calorie burning workouts as this is so low calorie to begin with.

I’ve always worked out so if I don’t do a little something it’s starts to really mess with my head. As in I start to feel more stressed and down in the dumps. I do it for the stress relief aspect and you don’t have to go hard to get that benefit.

Yes, I’m a personal trainer and nutrition coach. You can exercise and you should! I’ve lost 7 lbs and 15 inches in the last two weeks and I have not stopped exercising nor have a lost muscle mass. But it has to be done carefully. Here’s the deal (sorry for the long explanation): Your body burns macro nutrients (carbs, protein and fat) in just that order. Carbs first, then protein, then fat. Carbs are broken down into sugar, which is your bodies quickest form of energy. When it doesn’t have sugar to use, it then turns to stored muscle glycogen (a form of sugar) to burn. When it not longer has that, then it turns to protein (a. k. a. your muscle). Because we are in ketosis, we don’t have any sugar in our bloodstream or stored muscle glycogen for the body to use. So in order to give you the energy needed to support exercise, it has to burn muscle, which is obviously not what you want. Sooooo, in order to continue to exercise and not break down muscle you need to take care to do two things: 1) watch the intensity of your workout. If you are unable to talk, you are working to hard. It means you are working without oxygen or anerobic. When you are anerobic, your body uses protein (your muscle) for fuel and not fat because it takes more time to break down fat into useable energy. And when you are working at that intensity, your body needs energy ASAP! So keeping your heart rate and breathing I check will keep you in an aerobic state and burning fat instead of muscle. 2) be sure to take a branched chain amino acid supplement (IP’s are really yummy) either during or immediately after your workout. Amino acids are the building blocks of muscle and exercise is catabolic (meaning it breaks down muscle). So in order to help rebuild what you’ve just broken down by exercise, you need to give your body a little “boost” with the BCAA. Our bodies are amazing and the layers of metabolic processes that it has in place to keep us alive are incredible. Just knowing a little about how it works definitely helps you work this program a little better. So long answer to a short question is yes, do exercise. Just take care to mind your heart rate and take a BCAA. Hope that helps!

Very informative thank you. I just do a little upper and lower body work out with weights and a light jog for about 1. 5 to two miles a few ti. es a week. Nothing strenuous

@eanore6 you’re welcome!
by (2.5k points)
@discomfortable it’s going to be different for everyone. A good rule of thumb is if you can carry on a breathy conversation, you are working in the correct heart rate zone. If you cannot talk, you’re working too hard.

I take kickboxing classes, boxing, cardio and strength classes and haven’t stopped. My coach knows about it. She told me to have an extra drink and BCAA’s . I’m sure working out is the reason I’m losing slowly (average 1-1. 5lbs a week) but I love it and it makes me feel good and I’m not giving it up. I’ve lost a total of 60-70 pounds (through a combination of a healthy diet and exercise) and have kept off most of it for 5 years. I occasionally gain 10-20 back and that’s when I hop right back onto ideal protein but I feel great, I have no loose skin bc I worked out throughout my weight loss and I have no intention of stopping.

Been on the program since October. Just recently added treadmill to the mix. I try to do 15 minutes at a time, a few times a day. I just want to help tone, not necessarily speed up weight loss. But if that happens I will be happy about it

I was told I could do light exercise cause of how restricted the diet was. Any high instensity cardio my coach said could risk me passing out. So I typically just walk the treadmill at a decent pace

If you're going to exercise please make sure you also take use the Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAA) in water to help your muscles not lose protein when your exercise.

Light exercise only is recommended because it’s not a balanced diet and you risk burning muscle mass. Remember the largest muscle in your body is your heart! Loss may look good now, but it increases chances of Yo-yo diets which are tough in your heart.
