Great question. As you start loosing the weight, it helps you from loosing muscle mass. Also, if you are doing any exercise, it helps with muscle spasms you may get from time to time.

Sorry it does help with muscle cramps, but not in muscle mass. it’s just sodium and potassium. BCAA’s and getting your IP packets/whole protein protect your muscle mass

@sudiesudnor thank you for the correction.

@empirical no worries, I’ve been teaching and coaching protocol for 7 years  happy to help!

@sudiesudnor excellent! I’m down 70+lbs now thanks to this program.

@empirical woohoo! Congrats  I am sitting 115lbs lower than my heaviest, and maintained now for that seven years! Love it, and am never going back to carbs.

@sudiesudnor excellent job! What have you been doing to maintain? I’m about 5 or so pounds from my goal.

@empirical get your phase out/macro sheet and count all your carbs, don’t go over 40g net per day. Fill in with fat and whole protein, eat low glycemic veggies like select or raw unlimited. I don’t add grain or fruit or potatoes back in.

@sudiesudnor Hi Melissa, I have a question.  what % is phase 1 divided in terms of protein, fat and carbs per day. I wanted to start logging in my fitness pal app so was curious about what goals should I put. Thanks in advance.

@morpho73 it actually EI t show a ‘full’ day by goals as you get about 50-60g of protein, 40g carbs, minimal fat from the recommended oil, some in packets/whole protein, but the rest of your ‘daily total’ actually come from burned fat calories!

It helps get your sodium and potassium in! First sign you’re low is often in headaches and muscle cramps!

The body uses sodium to maintain fluid levels. A balance of fluid and sodium is necessary for the health of the heart, liver, and kidneys. It regulates blood fluids and prevents low blood pressure.

Sodium is an important part of your body’s function. Sodium and potassium are what make your muscles contract and relax, not just skeletal muscle (the stuff that makes you move and walk), but also smooth muscle like the muscle that is in your intestines and esophagus but maybe most importantly your cardiac muscle. You can have cardiac issues without the proper amount of sodium and potassium in your diet. And since we’re on such a restricted diet right now you’re probably not getting enough sodium in your diet so it must be supplemented.

I use sea salt which is an alternate salt we can use.

@luo8 in general everyone should use the IP salt for the extra potassium supplementation, unless you are on certain blood pressure medications that are potassium sparing.

The new protocol sheet says Ideal Protein salt or sea salt so I'm using the sea salt.

@luo8 I can't use IP's salt because it has iodine in it. I'm totally iodine intolerant.

@luo8 then I’d suggest discussing with your coach and follow up on potassium blood work to ensure you’re getting enough
