Ok going to an all inclusive vacation in a week. I have lost 83 pounds and I know I deserve to go and enjoy myself. However I am terrified of food now. I also would like to have some wine and I am also terrified. Am I out of the normal with this? Also I am a week away from leaving and I am still full on the diet. Do I need to wean off?

With the change in protocol and 3 phases, you should talk with your coach. If it was me, I would stay on protocol as best I could and not drink.

If you want to have wine you definitely need to be off. but . do you really want to be off ? I am sure there will be protein veggies you can eat and stay on protocol.

Need to switch to alt plan so u can have the alcohol. I did this around christmas time. It adds some carbs/sugar into ur body so it is not stunned by the sudden increase in sugar from the alcohol. Still lost inches and pounds
by (2.7k points)
@fulgurite Is this the athletic protocol? I didn't know you could have alcohol on that protocol.
by (7.6k points)
@fibroblast it is the one for athletes and diabetics. Still not allowed alcohol on this one but you dont want to be in ketosis if you are going to have alcohol, it's dangerous. So I planned for my party. Did the alt plan for 1. 5 weeks before drinking. I didnt want to just not do the program all together. The alt plan allows a carb, a fruit and a diary along with everything that you already eat. You will get out of ketosis but still have a plan to follow to mai tain or even still lose weight.

@fulgurite Another question about that. if you know the answer. Are those who follow the athletic plan not in ketosis while following that protocol? Or, because of their higher activity levels it's different? '
by (7.6k points)
@fibroblast that is correct, they are not in ketosis. Its was designed around diabetics and people with diabetes cant go into ketosis as they will develop ketoacidosis which is deadly. I don't know for athletes but it allows more calories which are burned during their workouts

I had lost 60# by Thanksgiving but Jew the holidays were going to be tough. From Thxgvg to New Years I splurged. I had regular meals with lots of veggies and perhaps a couple of bites of carb, some alcohol when I wanted it and even the occasional sweet treat. I found that my stomach had shrunk so much my tolerance for quantity consumption was way down. Yes, I gained about 8 lbs in that 7 weeks, but it dropped off the first week I went back on the plan. I’m very proud of myself for that, but I’m sure some people will get on here and tell me I shouldn’t have stopped. I’m 62 and too old to let myself listen to strangers. I make my own decisions ad this one worked out well for me. Now, on to the next 60 lbs by @pyrotechnics!

Agreeing with others regarding weaning off, especially if you plan on drinking alcohol. I wish coaches would stress this. You can end up really really sick if you drink alcohol while in ketosis. Wean off before boozing up! (Even a ½ a drink)

@shakhty I get it but it doesn’t take much to make you sick if you’re in ketosis. This was posted here not too long ago. FYI Why is alcohol completely forbidden on the Ideal Protein Protocol (hint; it's not because of the sugar in your wine)?  ➡️In short(ish)- because we have restricted the carbs/sugars going into your body. Your liver and skeletal muscle are now storing less glucose which is normally utilized to readily control blood sugar levels. But your body does become smarter after getting into ketosis. Your liver starts to be a key production facility of glucose which keeps your blood sugar levels at a regular standard! Now let's think about that toxic alcohol Being a toxin your body sounds an alarm telling the liver to prioritize the removal of this toxin. ☢️ With the detoxification process now underway in your liver, glucose production has been halted which can cause your blood sugar levels to plummet. If your blood sugar levels drop too low this can cause you to pass out without warning and possibly damage your brain! ⚠️ #WisdomWednesday #ThatTimeOfYear #LowCarb #KetoDiet #WeightLoss

@shakhty I was really sick, passed out, etc. after drinking while on the diet. Talk to your coach. eat some carbs and wake your liver up. Don’t want anyone to experience what I did after just a couple of glasses of wine

Go enjoy yourself. Do phase 3 until then, and then get right back on track the day after you get home. This has to be sustainable. Live and eat mindfully. We can't live in fear of food, but must respect our bodies and how they react to certain foods. I did this in October and got right back to it. Happy Birthday. Congrats on beating cancer! Enjoy your trip!

We did that over the holidays. Have you talked to your coach about a fast phase off? Saved me. I ate and had fun and drank more than I should but, with all the extra walking at the ports especially, I only gained 2. 5 pounds. Hubs was worse about the water intake and gained 14 back. So, lesson learned: drink water and walk everywhere!

I just returned from an all inclusive. I did not wean myself - I drank- but I did not eat deserts and really tried to stick to veggies and protein that was not fried or served in sauces- it wasn’t easy- but I enjoyed myself tremendously. At the end of the week I felt really bloated and I will tell you I had a horrible day of detoxing and gained five pounds. BUT since Monday I have been strict and lost the five pounds. I’m not sure I would drink as much if i did it again- but I am learning anbd paying attention to that which is new for me. Progress not perfection.

And congrats on your birthday and being cancer free. Enjoy yourself !

Maybe follow a keto diet so you can feel like you're indulging but still staying in ketosis? Allow yourself some wine. It's vacation. Also, whiskey and diet soda is carb free. I could never follow this diet 100% of the time. If I did, I would give up quickly.

@parotid Have you read the info on alcohol? This is a keto diet & any keto diet carries the same risk when you drink even a little alcohol. The advice you’re giving is dangerous.
by (200 points)
@markup This diet makes alcohol dangerous because of the overall lack of calories. When we go out, if I want a drink, I have a whiskey and diet. Still should practice moderation. I have friends that follow keto (not IP), that is also their beverage of choice. She's asking about a drink, so I'm telling her if she's going to have a drink, one that is keto approved
by (6.9k points)
@parotid no no no! Read the info on alcohol! You can end up very very sick. It’s not the carbs that harm you, it’s the alcohol!
by (200 points)
I didn't say the carbs are what makes it dangerous. I said the lack of carbs are what makes the drink keto approved. People on keto still have drinks sometimes. I said have the drink. Not have a bunch of drinks. If you are concerned, then sure, don't have a drink. She said she wants to have a drink.
by (6.9k points)
@parotid You’re missing the point. Drinking any alcohol at all can be very dangerous. The reason doesn’t matter. The advice you’re giving is dangerous. Read the info given.

Honestly, I just went on a vacation and at just shy of 100# lost, knew I wanted to share some drinks. I was advised to eat a piece of whole wheat toast if I was going to drink. Introducing a healthier complex carb for my organs to be “ok” with the much simpler sugar of alcohol. That being said, alcohol inhibits your food barriers. best way I can think to put it. So don’t go “off the rails” I ate all protocol except the bread when I decided to have a drink that day. This was on the advice of my dietician and coach. Definitely reach out to YOUR coach! Knowing the facts helps you be on point, in my opinion
