Drinking while on this plan us DANGEROUS! YOU CANNOT CARB LOAD YOUR WAY TO SAFE DRINKING on this plan. The extremely low calorie and fat in take over days and weeks cannot be undone eating carbs for a couple days. That works on keto which is SIGNIFICANTLY higher calories and fat than IPA/IP! You need a mini phase off over 8-10 days and even then you will not be able to drink a lot.

@fiord35650 Bryce Wagner excellent explanation! Even in maintenance you have to be very careful with alcohol.

None. All will kick you out of ketosis. Not only that, you may get seriously ill, dizzy, and may get you hospitalized. Your system can’t handle the intake of alcohol while on protocol. Wait until you have phased off

None. Not worth the icky feels and possible weight gain. Maybe try club soda and lime juice instead?

I have stayed clear of alcohol. I found the water enhancers are great mixed 1/2 with water and soda water with lots of ice.

Alcohol is strictly forbidden on IP. You will put your health and safety at risk if you drink. There have been people on IP that have passed out on the street, passed out and severely injured their heads and been hospitalized.

I'd recommend bringing sodawater and lime (avoid the alcohol! ) and put it in a fancy cup. Have fun with your drink and noone will know it wasn't alcoholic :)

@rathenau This is what I do and it tastes ~alright~ but I dont feel like I'm missing out cuz I still have my fancy cup and something fizzy

Alcohol is a powerful inhibitor of gluconeogenesis. It forces part of the gluconeogenic metabolic process into reverse. This means that if all the glucose in the blood is being derived from gluconeogenesis then the consumption of alcohol will inevitably cause the blood glucose level to fall. The alcohol also stops ketone body production, thus leaving the brain without fuel. A person who is ketotic is 100% reliant on gluconeogenesis to maintain adequate levels of glucose in the blood. If, under these circumstances alcohol is taken, the person can become disorientated and might lose consciousness, not just from the alcohol, but from low blood sugar. Does this happen to the point of extreme danger to everyone every time. No. Will it happen to you? You will not know until it happens!

Don’t do it. A lot of us wind up in hospital. It will push thru your liver too fast. Not worth it. I do flavored seltzer in a wine glass makes me feel like it’s real when it’s not. Good luck

My coach walked me through what to do but it's not worth a two week setback. That is a waste of about $180 bucks. I'm going on a girls trip and will spend the money shopping.

@individualism Me too spring break girls trip! I’m staying on the diet. All of them are very supportive. We have a grand suite so we will be eating in a lot. Most of us are on some type of diet. We have a cruise in May!

I drank wine while on the protocol ans was fine. I needed to kick back into keytosis which took a few days but for me it was a personal choice that was worth it. Weigh your pros and cons

@xerography1610 Very Dangerous! You were lucky. Hope no one follows this advice!

@stellular this is my third time around and Ive never had a problem

Well if someone asks me about my journey through the protocol I'll just tell them how it was for me. My sister did ideal too and drank wine from time to time and she was okay too. I'm not telling people they can go out and get loaded, just be responsible

I didnt have alcohol for 3 months- then had 2 bourbon drinks at a nice restaurant. I used to do that weekly at that restaurant. I got soooo sick! I vomited which doesnt happen often. I lost 30lbs ( goal 50lbs) and have lost my motivation since I feel so much better fitting into my clothes, etcetera. Now if I go to a party and want to have a drink I have some carbs the day before in the morning- and get myself out of ketosis then drink. But I only have 1-2. But I havent lost any weight since I strayed from protocol. Thankfully I have maintained.

One of the reasons I moved to pure Keto instead of Ideal. I could still have an occasional glass of wine or something else. FYI: Scotch has no carbs.

@sulphide If you are in ketosis you are playing Russian roulette if you drink alcohol. This isn’t about IP. It is a natural process that can make you pass out cold, if you drink alcohol while in ketosis.

My coach told me Vodka and ICE drinks or Mio water. But this is a huge but. listen to those above regarding health concerns. And when a little tipsy you are more likely to cheat!

@ancohuma Phelps Fridrich Your coach needs to be reported. He/she put you in danger with that advice.

I am on IP through my doctor and he said it was fine to have an occasional drink as long as it was just liquor and soda. No sugar or mixers. I prefer to abstain but he said it was fine.

@tallman the doctor is giving poor advice.

He's a cardiologist that manages weight loss for Northshore in Chicago, so I will assume that he knows what he is talking about. He did go to medical school and all

Your pancrease is sleeping to a great extent as is your liver. Having alcohol can do a lot of damage. plus, take a look at your paper work from the clinic. Chances are the contract you signed said no alcohol. Ours did. It can be so dangerous, one could be kicked off the program.

Alcohol does NOT kick you out of ketosis. Plenty of people drink while they are full on keto. The reason for forbidding it in IP is the pressure that you are already putting on your body does not go well with the pressure that alcohol + a low calorie diet puts on the liver.
by (34k points)
It has nothing to do with whether it will or will not take you out of ketosis. This is not that kind of keto. we eat far too low in fat and calories to be able to safely drink. The reason is you could put yourself in real danger with sudden drop n blood sugar and potential blackouts.

You will be fine. Act like a light weight, titrate your alcohol, & you will be fine. But you WILL burn alcohol calories before any other.

If you want something to drink have the IP pinacoalda add rum extract (non anchol) just a flavor. Nice SAFE substitute.

PS - the pancreas doesn't "sleep". It is just less active. It has to help in burning the carbs you DO eat (25-40/day depending on which IP foods & veggies you eat). And the liver is the main metabolizer of alcohol. People will tell you horror stores. These may be the same people who get tipsy off almost no alcohol. Just be judicious, don't go crazy, you will be fine. But your weight loss will likely be less, based on how much you indulge. Choose your calories, don't go food crazy, and hip right back on 100% the next day. It worked for me.
